Well, you know, them wild card matte football cards, they’re something, ain’t they? Kids these days, they go wild for ’em. I seen my grandkid, little Timmy, tradin’ ’em with his pals. “Grandma,” he says, “this one’s a rookie, see?” And he shows me a shiny card with some fella in a funny helmet.
Now, I don’t know much ’bout football, never really watched it. But these cards, they got pictures and names, just like them old movie star cards I used to collect when I was a girl. We didn’t have all these fancy colors back then, just black and white. But we loved ’em just the same.
- These here wild card matte ones, they got all sorts of players. Some are from college, some are rookies, whatever that means. They say some of ’em are worth a pretty penny, but I reckon that’s just folks talkin’.
- I heard tell there’s different colors too. Gold ones, blue ones, all sorts. Reminds me of them Easter eggs we used to dye. We’d boil ’em up with onion skins for yellow and beet juice for pink. Never had no blue though, that’s a fancy color.
Timmy tells me they got these numbers on ’em too. Serial somethin’ or other. I guess that’s how you tell which one’s which. Sounds complicated if you ask me. Back in my day, you just looked at the picture and knew who it was. No fancy numbers needed.
They make these cards every year, it seems. 2021, 2022, they just keep comin’. Just like them calendars the insurance man used to give out. Every year, a new picture of a dog or a cat. These football cards, though, they got pictures of fellas in tight pants and helmets. Not as cute as a kitten, if you ask me.
Kenny Pickett, Breece Hall, Garrett Wilson, Mac Jones, Timmy says these are the big names. I don’t recognize ’em, but he says they’re good players. I guess if he says so, it must be true. He knows more about this football stuff than I do.
You can buy these cards from all sorts of places. Online, in stores, wherever. Timmy says you can get ’em shipped all in one go. Sounds convenient, I suppose. Back in my day, you had to walk to the store and hope they had what you wanted.
They got these price guides too. Tell you how much each card is worth. Some of ’em are cheap, some of ’em are expensive. Just like apples in the market, I reckon. Some are good, some are bad, and you gotta pay more for the good ones.
I seen Timmy lookin’ at these cards on his computer too. eBay, he calls it. Says you can see what folks are payin’ for ’em. Sounds like a whole lot of fuss over some pieces of cardboard. But if it makes him happy, I guess it’s alright.
These wild card matte football cards, they’re a whole new world to me. Full of numbers and names and colors I don’t understand. But they make Timmy happy, and that’s all that matters. Maybe one day he’ll explain it all to me, and I’ll understand what all the fuss is about. Until then, I’ll just smile and nod and let him have his fun.
