Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here Colorado Mesa University volleyball team. Them girls, they play hard, real hard. Like when you’re tryin’ to get the last biscuit at breakfast, you know? They fight for every point, just like we used to fight for a good spot at the market.
I heard tell some of them girls, like that Hahni Johnson girl, she’s been playin’ for a long time. Five years, they say! That’s a lot of volleyball, ain’t it? She dug up the ball more times than I dug potatoes in my garden. 422 times! Lord have mercy, that’s a lot of diggin’! And that other girl, VanDeList, they say those two helped win a whole bunch of games. 105 of ‘em! Said it’s the best group of seniors they ever had.
- They got smart girls on the team too. Heard they won a bunch of awards for bein’ smart.
- Like them MIT girls, smart as whips, they say. Good for them, I say. Brains and brawn, that’s what you need.
Now, sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. That’s just life, ain’t it? Like when you plant your corn and some of it just don’t grow. They played against that North Dakota State team in somethin’ called a “quarterfinal.” Sounded important. And they played in Kansas City, a long ways away from here.
Folks gotta sign up to play on these teams, you know. Gotta fill out papers and such. Just like when you gotta sign papers to get your tractor fixed. It’s all official-like.
These Mesa girls, they made history, they did! Beat the number one team! Can you believe it? Beat ‘em in four sets. Folks were cheerin’ and hollerin’, I bet. Just like when we used to have those barn dances and everyone was stompin’ their feet.
One of them girls, Sabrina somethin’-or-other, got a big award. First team, they called it. Must be real good. And another girl, Sierra Hunt, she got somethin’ too. They work hard, them girls, just like we used to work hard on the farm.
But sometimes, things don’t go your way. They lost one time, got beat by another team from Colorado. Happens to the best of ‘em, I say. Like when you think you got the biggest pumpkin in the patch and then someone else shows up with one even bigger.
This Mesa team, they play in somethin’ called the NCAA Tournament. Big deal, I reckon. Played against a team from Dallas. Third time they played ‘em! Must be rivals, like them Hatfields and McCoys we used to hear about.
They even got some new girls on the team. Just startin’ out, you know? Like little chicks just out of the egg. Gotta learn the ropes, gotta learn to play together. That’s how it is with everything, ain’t it? You start small, and you grow.
Colorado Mesa University volleyball, it’s somethin’ special. Them girls got heart, they got grit, and they got spirit. Just like us old folks. We might not be able to jump and spike like them, but we know a thing or two about hard work and stickin’ together. And that’s what it takes to win, whether it’s on the volleyball court or out in the fields.
And you know, them girls playin’ volleyball and soccer and all, they started their season and did pretty good. Won most of their games. Six out of seven! That’s somethin’ to be proud of, I tell ya. Just like when you have a good harvest, you feel good about all your hard work.
So, that’s the story of the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team, as best as I can tell it. They’re good girls, strong girls, and they make us proud. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it?
