Alright, let’s talk about this Raul Meza fella in Austin, ya know, the one they’re all yappin’ about. Heard it on the TV, that dang box always blabberin’ somethin’. This Meza, born way back in 1960, Travis County, to a woman named Elvia Ortiz and some fella named Raul Meza Senior. Sounds like a regular family, right? Well, hold your horses, it ain’t that simple.
This Raul Meza, the younger one, he done messed up real bad. Killed somebody, they say. Not just any killin’ either, it was murder, the worst kind. And now, he’s gonna spend the rest of his days in jail. No gettin’ out, no parole, nothin’. Just bars and walls till he kicks the bucket. Heard they call it “life without parole.” Sounds scary, don’t it? Sixty-three years old and that’s how he ends up.
Now, Austin, that’s a big city, I reckon. Always somethin’ happenin’. They got all sorts of fancy folks and big businesses there. Heard somethin’ about a fella named Stephen Schwarzman, runs some big company called Blackstone. Owns a bunch of land and buildings in Austin, they say. Millions of square feet, whatever that means. Sounds like a whole lotta space to me. Makes ya wonder if Meza ever even knew folks like that existed in his own town. Probably not.

- Sentence: Life in prison without parole
Then there’s this other fella, Lloyd Doggett. He’s a big shot politician, represents Austin in somethin’ they call the House of Representatives. Big fancy words, huh? Means he’s got some power, I guess. Deals with health stuff and money stuff, or so they say. Don’t know much about it myself, sounds complicated. Politics, always a mess, just like my chickens when the rooster gets out.
So, ya got this Raul Meza, a killer, gonna rot in jail. And then you got these other folks, rich businessmen and politicians, runnin’ the show in Austin. Two different worlds, I tell ya. One fella takin’ a life, others probably makin’ deals worth more money than I can even imagine. Makes you think, don’t it? About life and choices and how things turn out.
Meza, he pleaded guilty, they said. Means he admitted to it. No fightin’, no tryin’ to get out of it. Just fessed up and took his punishment. Maybe he felt bad, maybe he didn’t. Hard to say. People are complicated, that’s for sure. Just like a tangled ball of yarn, sometimes you can’t find where it all went wrong. Heard he murdered someone, just plain awful, that is. Nobody deserves to have their life taken.
Austin’s changed a lot, I reckon. Used to be a sleepy little town, now it’s booming, full of folks from all over. More people, more problems, I guess. But a murder, that’s somethin’ else. That’s a darkness that sticks around, no matter how much sunshine you got. This Meza fella, he’s part of that darkness now, a stain on the city. Probably a lot of folks in Austin he knew, real sad.
And that Blackstone fella, ownin’ all that land, he probably don’t even know Raul Meza’s name. Just another blip on the news, somethin’ to shake his head at and then forget. That’s how the world works, I suppose. Big folks get bigger, little folks get swallowed up. And sometimes, little folks do big bad things and end up payin’ the price. It’s a hard life, no doubt about it. Makes you appreciate the simple things, like a good cup of coffee and a sunny day. And knowing your kids and grand-kids are safe and sound.
So, that’s the story of Raul Meza, as far as I can tell. A life gone wrong, a city movin’ on, and a whole lot of folks just tryin’ to make sense of it all. Life in prison, that’s a long time to think about what you done. Hope he finds some peace, though I reckon he don’t deserve it. But that ain’t for me to judge. I’m just an old woman, tellin’ it like I see it.
