Alright, let’s talk about this McAllen High School football, you know, the one them youngsters play. I don’t know much about fancy sports, but I hear tell it’s a big deal around here.
McAllen Bulldogs Football, that’s what they call it. Sounds tough, like them dogs my neighbor used to have, always barkin’ and chasin’ cars. These kids, they chase a different kinda thing, that brown ball, whatchamacallit, a football.
They got a schedule, you know, like when the doctor tells you when to take your pills. This schedule tells you when them boys are gonna be runnin’ around and knockin’ each other down. They play other schools too, like McAllen Rowe, Los Fresnos, and PSJA Memorial. Sounds like a whole lotta towns got these football teams.
- Game one, they played Los Fresnos, and wouldn’t you know it, they lost. 43 to 10, that’s what I heard. A whoopin’, that’s what it was.
- Then they played PSJA Memorial, don’t know how that went, but I reckon they put up a fight. These boys, they don’t give up easy, I tell ya.
They got this place, McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, where they do all this runnin’ and hittin’. Big place, I hear, lots of seats, probably smells like popcorn and sweat.
Now, I ain’t been to one of these games myself. Too loud for my old ears, and my knees ain’t what they used to be. But I see the kids around town, all excited, wearin’ them shirts with the Bulldog on ’em. They got spirit, them kids, gotta give ’em that.
They say these games last a long time, two or three hours! Can you imagine? Sittin’ there that long, watchin’ kids run around. They break it up into quarters, though, twelve minutes each. Guess they need a breather every now and then.
And the scores, they put ’em up on the internet now, on somethin’ called “Scorebook Live” and “*”. Don’t ask me how it works, it’s all magic to me. But folks can see who won and who lost, right there on their phones. Heck, when I was young, we just waited for the newspaper to come out the next day.
This McAllen High School, it’s a big school, I hear. Over two thousand kids! That’s more folks than lived in my whole town when I was growin’ up. And they got teachers there too, one teacher for every twelve kids, somethin’ like that. Guess that’s good, keeps ’em outta trouble… maybe.
They even got websites and stuff, “*” they call one of ‘em. They show these games on there, live, so you can watch from your couch if you don’t wanna go to the stadium. Fancy, huh? They got everything these days. Football, basketball, volleyball, even water polo, whatever that is. Sounds like a lotta splashin’ around to me.
So, yeah, that’s what I know about this McAllen High School football. It’s a big thing, keeps the kids busy, and folks seem to like it. Me, I’ll stick to watchin’ my birds and tendin’ my garden. But good for them kids, runnin’ around and havin’ fun. Just hope they don’t get hurt too bad.
And them Bulldogs? Well, I hope they win more games than they lose. That’s what it’s all about, right? Winnin’. Just like when I used to bake pies for the county fair, always wanted that blue ribbon. Same kinda thing, I guess, just with more runnin’ and less pie.
