Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Madrid Iowa football thing, you know, the kind them youngsters play. I ain’t no expert or nothin’, but I hear things, see things. Folks get all riled up ’bout it, so I figured I’d share what I know.
Madrid Football, huh? Yeah, that’s what they call it. These boys, they run around, throwin’ a pointy ball, smackin’ into each other. Don’t make much sense to me, but they seem to like it. And folks sure do love to watch ’em.
Heard tell Madrid, this little town, they got a team. A football team. They play in some kinda conference, West Central, they call it. Sounds fancy, don’t it? Been playin’ for a good long while too, like 25 years or somethin’. That’s a heap of time, I tell ya.
Now, I saw somethin’ ’bout a game, happened not too long ago, October 13th, 2023, I think it was. They played another team, Lisbon. Little town, Lisbon. Them Madrid boys, they won. Beat Lisbon 27 to 14. Heard that fella, Preston Wicker, he ran like the wind. 215 yards, they said, and scored three times! Imagine that, runnin’ all that way.
They got a schedule too, this Madrid football team. You can find it, I reckon, if you wanna know when they’re playin’. Seems like folks are always lookin’ for the scores. Wanna know if their team won, I guess. I seen somethin’ about On3, they keep track of the scores and all. And that CalPreps, they do too.
- They got this quarterback, Preston Wicker, real good runner.
- They play in the West Central Conference.
- They beat Lisbon in a playoff game.
They got this school, Madrid High School, they call it. And these boys, they’re the Madrid Tigers. They play all sorts of sports there, not just football. Baseball, basketball, you name it. But football, that’s the one folks get all worked up about.
This high school, it’s on Kennedy Avenue, 599 North Kennedy Avenue, to be exact. That’s what I heard, anyway. And they got this newspaper, The Gazette, they write about the games and all. And that University of Iowa, they keep track of the high school games too. Big deal, this high school football.
Playoff games, that’s somethin’ else. They got these playoffs, and if you win, you keep playin’. If you lose, you go home. Them Madrid boys, they was still playin’ when I last heard. Sixteen teams left, they said. Tough competition, I reckon.
So, this Madrid Iowa football, it’s a big thing. Keeps folks entertained, gives ’em somethin’ to talk about. Wins and losses, scores and schedules, it’s all part of it. And them boys, they keep on playin’, runnin’ and throwin’ that pointy ball. That’s all I know about it, more or less.
