Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Iredell football, y’know, the kind them young’uns play. It’s a real hoot, I tell ya! Folks get all riled up ’bout it, just like they do ’bout a good chicken fry.
Iredell High School Football, that’s somethin’ else. They got this team, the Dragons, and they’re somethin’ fierce, or so they say. I ain’t seen ’em play myself, my old bones ain’t up for all that runnin’ around and hollerin’, but I hear tell they’re pretty good. They got this fella, big as a barn door, runs like a greased pig. Folks say he’s gonna go far, maybe even get one of them fancy scholarships. Lord knows what he’ll do with it, but good for him, I reckon.
Now, they play all sorts of teams, see? Bynum, South Iredell, North Iredell… names I ain’t never heard of half the time. But these young’uns, they get all worked up ’bout it. They got this game where they beat Bynum so bad they stopped playin’ at halftime. 59 to 14, they say! Mercy rule, they call it. Sounds like they showed ’em who’s boss, alright.
- They got this team, see, North Iredell. First time in the playoffs since 2006. That’s a long time, even for an old gal like me! Folks were real happy ‘bout that, cheering and such. Good for them, I say. Gives them something to do other than causing mischief.
- And then there’s South Iredell. Never played ’em before, apparently. Keeps things interestin’, I guess. Never know what you’re gonna get, like a box of chocolates, Forrest Gump always said. Though I prefer a good piece of pecan pie myself.
They even got this paper, the Observer, they call it, writin’ ’bout all these games. Previewin’ ’em, recappin’ ’em… Makes a big to-do out of it. I guess folks like readin’ ’bout it, keeps ’em entertained. More power to ’em, I say. Keeps ’em outta trouble, mostly.
And it ain’t just the high school, y’know. They got this Texas football too, Iredell versus Oakwood. Playoffs, they say. Big game. Them Panthers versus the Dragons. Sounds like a real showdown. Don’t know much ‘bout Texas, but they sure do love their football, just like us.
Then there’s this Reidsville school, got all them fancy state titles, 23 they say. That’s a whole heap of winnin’, I tell you what! Don’t rightly know if they play Iredell or not, but they sure are somethin’ else with all them wins.
High school football playoffs, that’s when things get real serious. Everyone’s on the edge of their seats, hopin’ their team makes it all the way. It’s excitin’, I reckon, even if I don’t understand all the rules. Folks get all dressed up in their team colors, hootin’ and hollerin’. Reminds me of a barn raisin’, everyone comin’ together, but with more yellin’.
So, yeah, that’s Iredell football for ya. A bunch of young’uns runnin’ around, folks gettin’ all excited, and a whole lotta hollerin’. It’s a part of life ’round here, I guess. Keeps things lively, that’s for sure.
And let me tell ya, them Friday night lights, they shine bright. You can see ‘em from miles away. It’s a real spectacle, even if you’re just sittin’ on your porch, listenin’ to the crickets and the distant cheers. It’s the sound of community, the sound of folks comin’ together, and that’s a good thing, no matter how you slice it.
So, whether it’s Iredell High School, or some other team in Texas or wherever, football is football. It brings folks together, gives them something to cheer for. And in this day and age, that ain’t a bad thing at all. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got a pie in the oven, and I don’t want it to burn.
