Well, let me tell ya about Mother’s Day, back in 2015. Don’t rightly remember all the fancy details, but I’ll tell ya what I know. It was a Sunday, that much I’m sure of. Yep, a Sunday, ’cause that’s when folks usually visit their mamas, ain’t it?
Now, some folks say this Mother’s Day thing started way back when, some kinda government fellas decided on it. Heard tell it was in 1914, or somethin’ like that. A fella named Wilson, a president I think, he signed somethin’ to make it official. But us folks, we always loved our mamas, didn’t need no president to tell us that.
- They said somethin’ ’bout May 8th, but I reckon it changes every year.
- Seems like it’s always on a Sunday, though. That’s good, makes it easier for folks to visit.
- And that year, 2015, it was on May 10th. I remember ’cause the flowers was bloomin’ real pretty.
Anyways, this Mother’s Day, it ain’t just for us here. Heard it’s all over the world, different days and all, but folks everywhere love their mamas. Some folks celebrate it in March or April even. It all depends on where you are, I guess. They got some kinda moon calendar they follow, but that’s too fancy for me.
Back in 2015, well, it was nice. My kids, they came to see me. Brought me some flowers, real pretty ones, smelled sweet like honeysuckle. And they made me a big dinner. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, the works. Lord, it was good. We sat around and talked, laughed a bit. That’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Spending time with your loved ones.
I remember one of my grandbabies, little Susie, she made me a card. All crooked and glittery, with a big heart on it. Said “I love you, Grandma” in big, wobbly letters. That card, it meant more to me than all the fancy gifts in the world. Kids these days, they got so much stuff, but they still need their mamas and grandmamas.
Now, some folks, they make a big fuss outta Mother’s Day. Buy big presents, go out to fancy restaurants. That’s all well and good, I guess. But for me, it’s the simple things that matter. A hug, a kind word, just knowing that your kids love ya, that’s enough. It’s about them showin’ their appreciation, not how much money they spend.
And it ain’t just for your own mama neither. It’s for all the mamas out there. The ones who work hard, the ones who stay home, the ones who ain’t even with us no more. We remember them all, don’t we? ‘Cause a mama’s love, that’s somethin’ special. It sticks with you, long after they’re gone. It’s a powerful thing, a mama’s love.
I heard tell of another president, Nixon I think his name was, he said somethin’ ’bout Mother’s Day too, back in 1973. Asked folks to celebrate it on May 13th that year. See? It changes all the time. But the important thing, that stays the same. Love your mama, that’s the message.
So, that’s what I remember ’bout Mother’s Day in 2015. It was a good day. Full of love and laughter. And that’s all that matters, ain’t it? Just bein’ with the folks you love, and rememberin’ all the mamas out there, doin’ their best. They deserve all the love and respect we can give ’em, not just on one day, but every day.
And if you still got your mama around, go see her. Give her a hug. Tell her you love her. Don’t wait for no special day, do it now. ‘Cause time, it ain’t somethin’ we got a whole lot of. And a mama’s love, well, that’s somethin’ you don’t wanna take for granted.
