Listen here, I gotta tell ya ’bout this Anissa Gutierrez, plays basketball you know. She ain’t no big shot like them fellas on TV, but she’s a fighter, that girl. Runs around like a chicken with its head cut off, always chasin’ the ball.
They say she plays for the Texas Longhorns. Longhorns? What kinda name is that? Sounds like somethin’ from a farm. Anyways, she’s a guard, whatever that means. Shorty, she is. 5-7 they say. Don’t know how tall that is in real inches, but she ain’t no giant, I tell ya. Still, she runs faster than a jackrabbit, gotta give her that.
- Junior, they say she is. Means she’s been playin’ for a while, I guess. Learned a thing or two.
This ESPN thing, they talk about her. Says she played for somethin’ called “teams.” Well, duh, ain’t basketball a team sport? They list her points and them rebound things. Points, that’s how many times she throws the ball in the hoop, right? Rebounds, that’s when she grabs the ball when someone misses. She must be good at grabbin’ ’cause they mention it a lot.
Big 12 Conference, that’s where she plays. Big 12. Means there’s 12 teams, I reckon. They got stats, they say. Stats? Numbers, probably. How many points, how many rebounds, how many times she runs around like crazy. Numbers, numbers, always with the numbers.
They played Baylor. Lost bad. 53 to 85. Iowa too. Don’t know much ’bout them teams. Probably from other farms, hah!
This Gutierrez girl, she keeps playin’ though. Don’t see her quittin’. Gotta admire that. Reminds me of them chickens in my yard, always peckin’ away, never givin’ up. She’s like that, peckin’ away at the basketball, tryin’ to win.
People watch her, they cheer. Makes noise like a bunch of crows in a cornfield. She runs faster, throws the ball harder. Maybe she likes the noise, maybe it makes her play better. Who knows?
She ain’t perfect, this Gutierrez. Misses shots sometimes. Falls down, too. But she gets back up, dusts herself off, keeps playin’. That’s what matters, ain’t it? Keepin’ at it, even when things get tough.
Don’t know if she’ll be famous, this girl. Don’t know if she’ll win championships or whatever. But she plays hard, gives it her all. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
So, next time you see a basketball game on that TV, look for Anissa Gutierrez, the little gal from the Texas Longhorns. She might not be the biggest or the strongest, but she’s got heart. And sometimes, that’s all you need.
