Well, ya know, out here we ain’t got too much to do but sit on the porch and talk about football sometimes. So, let me tell ya about that Westlake football team from Austin. You may have heard of it, or maybe not. But that school, Westlake High, they’ve been making a big ol’ splash in football for years now. Yessiree, folks from there been poppin’ up in the NFL like it’s a regular thing. We talkin’ Drew Brees, Sam Ehlinger, Nick Foles, and Justin Tucker – they all came from that Westlake team, and they sure did make a name for themselves.
Now, I don’t know much about them fancy rankings, but I do know this: Westlake is somethin’ to reckon with. Last time I heard, they was sittin’ pretty at No. 4 in the state of Texas. That’s a mighty fine spot, lemme tell ya. They had a big ol’ showdown with them Humble Atascocita folks, who was ranked No. 6. Mighty fine game it was, I hear. Ain’t no slouch of a team, no sir. But Westlake, they came out on top, just like they’ve done in many a season.
Now, one of the more recent games, they was playin’ against Lake Travis. Mighty fine team from what I hear, but Westlake, they had ’em beat. 21-14 was the final score, and Westlake, well, they sure didn’t let up after that. No, sir, they just kept on pushin’. That’s how they do. Played ’em tough, and when the game ended, Westlake walked off the field proud. The folks at home were hollerin’ and clappin’ – it’s always a sight to see when them boys play.
They’ve been on a good run, too. I reckon that last playoff game where they beat Vista Ridge, well, that’s one folks around town been talkin’ about. Westlake was ahead by 18 points at halftime, and they just kept on goin’. By the end of the third quarter, they was leadin’ 39-10. The final score ended up 46-17. What a victory! That right there is a real good sign of a team that knows what they’re doin’. Ain’t no wonder they’re makin’ it all the way to the finals every season.
Now, let me tell ya, it ain’t all about the score. Sure, that’s important. But it’s also about how the team plays. Westlake don’t just show up to win; they show up to play with heart. And that’s somethin’ that goes a long way. When you got kids out there that ain’t just lookin’ at the scoreboard, but playin’ for the love of the game, it sure makes a difference. Ain’t that what sports is all about anyway?
Another thing about Westlake is they’ve got some real good folks workin’ behind the scenes, too. Coach Todd Dodge, now he knows how to run a program. He’s been leadin’ them boys for quite a while now, and he don’t just build up players, he builds up a team. A family. And that’s somethin’ you can’t put a price on. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you ain’t got that bond between players, you might as well stay home. That’s somethin’ Westlake’s got, alright.
So, when you hear the name “Westlake” in football circles, ya better believe it means somethin’. They ain’t just any ol’ team. They’re a powerhouse, and they ain’t gonna be slowin’ down anytime soon. From that 46-17 win to their 21-14 playoff victory, Westlake’s on the rise. And as far as I’m concerned, if you ain’t watchin’ ’em, you’re missin’ out.
