There’s another one in a place called Stinnett. West Texas High School, that’s the name. It’s a big place, too. Lots of kids go there, learnin’ all sorts of things. They got grades from 9 to 12. The little ones, they go to elementary school first. Then the middle ones, they go to middle school. And then they get here, to the big high school. They got all kinds of tests there. Math, readin’, science, you name it.

Now, these schools, they gotta teach the kids. And they gotta make sure they learn somethin’. Otherwise, what’s the point, right? They even rank ’em, these schools. See how good they are. This West High School, I heard it’s ranked pretty high up there. Means they’re doin’ somethin’ right, I reckon. They got rules and things. One thing is, the school is for everyone, even kids with some problems, like those need extra help. The school has to help everyone. They can not leave anyone behind.

  • They got this thing called enrollment. That’s how many kids go there.

There are other high schools in West Texas, too. My friend’s grandkid goes to a different one. There are a lot of them, some are public, some are private. All kinds, I reckon. But they all teach the same things, more or less. They teach them history, geography, and all that. They say they should take World Geography in 9th grade. Then World History in 10th grade, and then U.S. History. I don’t know about all that, seems like a lot of history to me. They gotta take somethin’ called Government and Economics. That’s important, I guess. Gotta know how the government works, and how to handle your money. They also have some other classes, like band, choir. Some kids even learn how to make things with wood. That’s useful, I tell ya.

Seems like schools these days are pretty important. They gotta prepare these kids for the world, you know? Teach ’em how to read and write, how to do math. Teach ’em about the world, about history. Prepare ’em for, you know, life. A lot of the kids, after high school, they go to some colleges. I heard that one big college, Texas A&M, have many kids, thousands and thousands. That’s a lot, ain’t it? But the high school, they gotta get ’em ready for all that.

They got these things called resources, too. For the parents. Helps ’em keep track of things, I guess. It’s all very complicated these days. I remember when school was just school. Now it’s all this other stuff, too. But I guess that’s just how it is now. These West Texas high schools, they’re doin’ their best, I suppose. Tryin’ to teach these kids what they need to know.

I just hope my grandbaby learns somethin’ useful. That’s all I want. To get a good job, make a good livin’. That’s what these schools are supposed to do, right? Help these kids make somethin’ of themselves. These high schools, they’re important, that’s for sure. A lot of kids in West, Texas. They all need to go to school and learn something. Schools need to teach them things they can use in the future. Then they can have a good life. That’s the most important thing, right?
